The Convergence Law Institute (CLI) is a non-profit organization
dedicated to research and education on public policy issues.
CLI’s guiding principle is that the institutions of markets and property rights are essential to technological and economic development, and to the freedom and creativity of the peoples of the world. However, these institutions cannot exist without strong and effective government. And the relationships between markets and governments are currently in crisis and continuously stressed by the pace of change even in good times.
CLI’s mission is to analyze the interconnections between governments on the one hand and markets and property rights on the other, to suggest better approaches to the relationship, and to educate policy makers, the press, and the public. The term “third way” has become a cliché. We seek practicable alternatives to absolute faith in either untrammeled markets or unrestrained government regulation.
Business sectors on which CLI focuses are:
• Telecommunications, the Internet, and high technology;
• Content industries (entertainment; publishing; newspapers;
Substantive areas of expertise include:
• Regulatory law and practice (esp. FCC &FTC);
• Administrative law;
• Competition policy;
• Law/economics studies;
• Intellectual property (copyright & patent policy).
We are also fascinated by developments in Asia, partly because
of the issues of markets and government regulation faced by these nations, and
partly because of the insights into the United States that flow from examination
of these developing economies.
Currently, CLI is focusing on six projects, Competition, Telecommunications,
News, Pharmaceuticals, Software, and China.
The Internal Revenue Service has approved CLI’s application for 501(c)(3) status.
